Armillaria Presence on Slopes
Posted By rhart on July 25, 2023
There have been some areas in the community where pepper trees have started to decline and die. The Board voted to have the arborist perform a soils and tree tissue analysis done to determine the cause of their decline. It was found that there is a presence of a fungus called Armillaria in the soil, which is deadly to pepper trees and other types of tree species. This fungus is actually quite common, but it cannot be eradicated. It spreads through wet soil, and it was surmised by the arborist that the combination of having the old vegetation on some of the slopes to comply with OCFA guidelines a few years ago and having a very wet winter created an environment for the Armillaria to thrive.
Going forward, the Association will be planting trees and shrubs that are resistant to Armillaria in areas that are suspected to have the fungus. If you see any trees in your area that appear to be in decline, please notify Action Property Management by emailing communitycare@actionlife.com to report the tree. Please be sure to include the approximate location and a picture of the tree if possible. The arborist will inspect the tree to determine if removal is recommended.
